Competition and Consumer Protection Commission publishes two new guidance documents for traders

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has published two new guidance documents for traders on their legal responsibilities to consumers when providing goods and services.

The Consumer Rights Act (CRA) was introduced in November 2022. It updated and strengthened consumer protection laws in Ireland. It is important for traders to understand their obligations under this legislation. The CRA sets out different consumer protection rules depending on whether a consumer enters into a contract for the sale of goods, a contract for the supply of digital content or digital services or a contract for the supply of services.

The CRA has also introduced amendments to the law on consumer credit for hire purchase agreements and consumer-hire agreements.

The guidelines, accessed through this link:  https://www.ccpc.ie/business/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2025/04/2025.03.27-Sale-Of-Goods-digital-version-final.pdf  provide an overview of the rules and remedies that apply to:

• contracts for the sale of goods (as set out in Part 2 of the CRA)
• hire purchase agreements (as set out in the Consumer Credit Act 1995, as amended by Part 8 of the CRA).
