Tanáiste Leo Varadkar to launch Ennis 2040 Strategy
Tanáiste Leo Varadkar today (Friday, October 22) launches the much-anticipated Ennis 2040 Strategy.
Ennis Chamber has had an active role in the process of developing the strategy, with successive Ennis Chamber Presidents, Diarmuid McMahon, Gwen Culligan and Allen Flynn, each taking their place on the Ennis 2040 Strategy Steering Group for the duration of their presidency.
At a recent meeting of Ennis Chamber Executive Board, newly appointed Kevin Corrigan COO, Ennis 2040 DAC gave a preview overview of the Ennis 2040 Strategy.
There are nine transformational projects identified in the document, including commercial plans for the riverside area of Abbey St, pedestrian accessibility at the Post Office Field via boardwalks, a potential multi-storey car park at Friar’s Walk and suggested luxury hotel on the Cornmarket Street side of the river Fergus.
Developing a boardwalk and cycle paths at Clareabbey is intended to boost the town’s potential as a tourism destination, while also improving leisure amenities for locals, it will also underpin the town’s claim and credentials to be the first ‘Climate Adaptive Town’ in Ireland. The strategy also references the ‘ten-minute town’ concept which is said to be key to boosting investment and to the delivery of a better quality of life.

Ennis Chamber CEO Margaret O’Brien said: “We look forward to the launch of the Ennis 2040 Strategy, it’s imperative to have ‘shovel ready’ projects to hand to avail of EU and other funding streams that become available in the future. We have seen first-hand how successful our neighbours in Limerick have been at accessing development funding in recent years by having a long term innovative strategy in place, in their case Limerick Twenty Thirty Plan. If we can emulate their success we will be doing well.
